The Land
Centuries ago, the Ute Native Americans were retreating to this canyon. It was their summer camp; a spiritual place filled with dense forest and cascading waterfalls where they could enjoy cooler temperatures and hunt the abundant game.
In the 1890s, the Stewarts first surveyed the majestic peaks of Mt. Timpanogos for the US Government. They saw an opportunity to homestead and protect a vast unspoiled treasure; thus began the love affair between this glorious mountain and a pioneer family.
For over 100 years, the Stewarts have savored this canyon's magic. As third-generation Stewarts, it's our honor and privilege to extend our warm and friendly hospitality to our guests and welcome them to this most extraordinary expression of nature.
Through the Decades
1890s
Andrew Jackson Stewart and his two sons, Scott and John R, first surveyed the canyon — now known as Sundance — for the US Government. They saw an opportunity to homestead and protect a vast unspoiled treasure; thus began the love affair between this glorious mountain and a pioneer family.
1932
In 1932, Hank and Ray Stewart, then in their early 20’s, over-wintered in a remote and rustic homestead cabin. Access to the nearest road was a 5-mile trek on skis. They had no electricity, and the only source of heat was a fireplace. This adventure was the backdrop for some amazing stories that were shared over the years by these two Stewart brothers.
1944
Ray Stewart and his wife Ava opened a quaint homespun ski resort called Timp Haven, a favorite of local skiers. With a homemade rope tow, a single chair lift crafted from local timbers, and a T-bar (that was scary as hell to ride), the small ski area became the embryo of what is now the Sundance Resort.
1969
The Stewarts sold the resort and 5,000 adjacent acres of land to Robert Redford, who held firm to his vision of protecting the canyon from developers for over 50 years. Less a few improvements over the years, the land remains much as it was, thanks to the environmental conservation of the Redford family.
The Stewart family joined Mr. Redford in making a public commitment to forever preserve their family lands by donating a large conservation easement to Utah Open Lands. As a result, the family legacy and stewardship of this extraordinary place will live on for future generations.
2006
It all began when Brad and Vicki, who lived full-time in Sundance, purchased a neighboring cabin as a leap of faith in taking the first step at starting a vacation rental business. Mind you, they knew absolutely nothing about the hospitality business.
But, as owners of a boutique marketing firm, they understood the golden rules of customer service: put customers first, exceed expectations, and treat every guest as you would like to be treated.
With the valued trust of friends and neighbors on the mountain, the company was able to slowly bring on more properties. As the company grew, they were fortunate to add family members to the team.
Today
Today, Stewart Mountain Lodging continues to operate as a family business, offering over 40 luxury mountain homes, cabins and cottages. For more than 20 years, thousands of guests have shared the Sundance experience with many returning year after year.
Two decades in, Stewart Mountain Lodging remains what it has always been: a family business rooted in this place and run by people who live and breathe the mountains.
